In a grim turn of events, Tripura witnessed a series of tragedies within a span of 24 hours, as three separate deaths—a suspected murder, a possible drug overdose, and a suicide—have cast a pall over the state.
In the first incident, panic gripped Mali Para in Holakhet village under Udaipur subdivision after the body of a woman was found in a paddy field early Saturday morning. The deceased has been identified as 47-year-old Shibani Das. Locals spotted her lying in a pool of blood around 7 AM and alerted the authorities.
A team led by Additional Superintendent of Police (Gomati) Souvik De, along with Radhakishorepur Police Station OC Babul Das, forensic experts, and a dog squad, reached the spot promptly. Initial reports indicate that Shibani’s face bore visible injury marks. Her body has been sent for post-mortem to ascertain the exact cause of death.
According to family members, Shibani—a mother of three—had been living at her father’s residence following a troubled second marriage. Relatives suspect foul play, particularly after a recent altercation with her husband. Although no formal complaint has been filed yet, police have registered a suo motu case and launched an investigation.
In a separate case, the body of an unidentified young man was discovered under the Jawahar Bridge in the Battala area. Suspected to be a drug overdose, the scene revealed drug paraphernalia next to the deceased. A voter ID card recovered at the site bears the name “Swapan Das,” reportedly from Teliamura, though his identity is yet to be officially confirmed. The body has been sent for autopsy, and a probe is underway.
Meanwhile, a tragic suicide was reported near the Jirania railway station, where a jawan of the 11th Battalion of Tripura State Rifles (TSR), Babul Debnath, allegedly ended his life by jumping in front of a train. The incident occurred early Saturday morning.
Sources close to the family revealed that Babul had been suffering from mental health issues and unresolved personal disputes. He was reportedly living separately after a strained second marriage. His mother has accused his daughter-in-law of financial exploitation, while his wife stated that Babul had long struggled with both physical and psychological ailments, leading to their estrangement.
Jirania police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances leading to the jawan’s death.
These back-to-back incidents have shocked the state, underlining growing concerns over mental health, drug abuse, and domestic violence. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or troubling activity.
