State taps rainwater to tackle water woes, seven projects completed

AGARTALA:

Tripura has taken a major stride in sustainable water management with the successful completion of seven rainwater-based projects, aimed at reducing dependence on groundwater and ensuring clean water access across the state.

Executed by the Drinking Water and Sanitation Department, the projects revolve around conserved rainwater reservoirs created by constructing check dams. These reservoirs are now supplying drinking and household-use water to communities in multiple districts.

“This initiative is a key part of our mission to secure long-term water availability amid rising environmental pressures,” a government official said.

In addition to the completed projects, three more are awaiting formal launch, and two are currently under construction. The department’s efforts have drawn praise as a replicable model for decentralized and eco-friendly water solutions.

Officials noted that apart from easing groundwater stress, these initiatives are making a tangible difference in the lives of people—particularly in remote, water-stressed areas—by providing a stable and locally managed water supply.
