Successful Sutureless Aortic Valve Replacement Surgery held at GB Pant

AGARTALA:

A groundbreaking medical achievement has been recorded at the Cardiac, Thoracic, and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) Department of Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital.

In a remarkable feat, a team of medical professionals led by Dr. Kanak Narayan Bhattacharya successfully conducted an advanced tissue valve sutureless aortic valve replacement surgery on a 60-year-old patient, Sabitri Sarkar, hailing from Sidhai Mohanpur under West District.

Speaking at a press conference today Dr. Shankar Chakraborty, Superintendent of GBP Hospital, along with Dr. Kanak Narayan Bhattacharya, Dr. Manimoy Debbarma, and Dr. Surjit Pal, elaborated on the innovative procedure and its successful execution.

The doctors have said that Sabitri Sarkar had been grappling with severe cardiac issues, characterized by chest pain and breathlessness. After a thorough assessment during her stay at GBP Hospital, it was revealed that her troubles stemmed from a malfunctioning aortic valve within her heart.

“Urgent intervention was required to replace the aortic valve, a procedure traditionally associated with the need for lifelong anticoagulation medication. This medication, while effective, also presented an increased risk of abdominal bleeding and melena (stomach bleeding). The medical team, in a significant decision, opted for a special tissue valve replacement system that eliminates the necessity of lifelong anticoagulation treatment, thereby mitigating the risk of potential bleeding complications”, the doctor said.

They further said that this specialized Percival tissue valve, a product of cutting-edge medical technology, was successfully implanted on August 4 through an open-heart surgery, lasting six hours.

Dr. Kanak Narayan Bhattacharya, supported by an exceptional team including Cardiac Anesthesiologist Dr. Manimoy Debbarma, Dr. Joydeep Debnath, and Dr. Surjit Pal, orchestrated the intricate procedure.

Their efforts were complemented by a skilled team of technologists comprising Sujan Sahu, Sudipta Mondal, Ratan Mondal, Jaydeep Chakraborty, Amrit Murasingh, Arpita Sarkar, Annabahadur Jamatia, and Satyajit Debnath.

The surgery was rendered possible free of cost under the auspices of the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, thanks to the benevolent efforts of the Patient Welfare Association. This initiative has not only alleviated the financial burden on the patient but also showcased the collective dedication of medical professionals towards improving patient outcomes and advancing medical science.
