Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das announced on Friday that the state’s fisheries sector has incurred an estimated Rs 1,350 crore in damages due to recent flooding. The minister stated that he has formally submitted a report of these losses to the Central government, which has assured the state of forthcoming support after a thorough review.
Minister Das shared this information at a state-level review meeting of the Fisheries Department, the second of its kind this year. The review focused on assessing the department's objectives across district and sub-divisional levels, tracking progress, and identifying challenges faced by the fisheries sector, especially in light of recent flooding those heavily impacted fish farmers in August.
“The main purpose of this meeting was to evaluate our targets and make adjustments where necessary. Despite the setbacks caused by flooding, we are actively working to support fish farmers, enhance fish production, and generate employment for the youth. The department is committed to meeting the state’s fish demand, though this year has posed additional challenges,” Das said.
He highlighted that Tripura’s annual fish requirement is 1,16,000 metric tonnes (MT), while current local production stands at 83,000 MT. The shortfall is typically covered by imports from Odisha, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, and occasionally from Bangladesh, though imports from Bangladesh have been affected recently.
Following the floods, Rs 10 crore in relief funds was distributed to help some affected fish farmers, Das noted. He confirmed that both the state and Central governments have been informed of the estimated Rs 1,350 crore losses, and that Central assistance is anticipated once the report has been fully assessed.
