Take necessary steps to make govt offices, schools and colleges plastic free: CM to CS

AGARTALA:

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has taken a significant step towards promoting environmental sustainability by instructing Chief Secretary JK Sinha to implement measures aimed at eliminating the use of plastics in government offices, courts, schools, and colleges.

The official launch of the Plastic Free Tripura campaign took place at Agartala Town Hall on Saturday, where Chief Minister Professor Dr. Manik Saha emphasized the harmful effects of plastic and the need for awareness.

Dr. Saha stated, "Plastic usage is detrimental to our health, causing various diseases and posing greater risks than addictions. Diseases like diabetes and cancer are on the rise due to the use of plastic. Therefore, it is crucial for everyone to understand its harmful aspects. Achieving a plastic-free Tripura requires well-informed citizens. Plastic usage has been prevalent in the state for a long time and the use of plastic packets especially in the market has seen a concerning increase in recent years."

In addition, the Chief Minister directed the Chief Secretary to take necessary actions to ensure cleanliness and the eradication of plastic from all government offices, courts, schools, and colleges.

"Despite repeated administrative warnings, no action has been taken. To address this issue, the Tripura State Pollution Control Board launched the Plastic-Free Tripura Abhiyan aiming to make Tripura a plastic-free state. The negative effects of plastic on society far outweigh any benefits it may have. It can lead to various diseases including diabetes and cancer. It is essential for everyone to comprehend the detrimental aspects of plastic. Awareness is the key to creating a plastic-free Tripura," emphasized CM Saha.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister stressed that the use of plastic is highly undesirable and should be completely banned.

The program was attended by distinguished guests, including Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumder, Chief Secretary JK Sinha, Pollution Control Board officials and other dignitaries. Students from various schools also actively participated in the event.

The plastic-free Tripura campaign, which commenced on Saturday, will continue for the next month.
