To user authorize 300 farmers of queen pineapples in Tripura to use Gl tagging of the NERAMAC processed certification, the North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation (NERAMAC) organised a Geographical Indication (GI) Awareness Seminar here at Agartala Pragna Bhagwan on Friday.
The state agriculture minister Ratan Lal Nath has inaugurated the seminar in presence of Managing Director of NERAMAC Commodore Rajiv Ashok (Red) and other officials. Over 200 Queen Pineapple Producers attended the event.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister shared that the GI initiative is part of the Gol's broader efforts to promote sustainable agriculture, protect the rights of farmers, and enhance the country's agricultural exports.
Meanwhile, the MD of NERAMAC expressed that the Gl initiative is a significant step towards promoting and protecting the traditional agricultural practices and products of the NER region. The initiative will provide recognition to the unique qualities and reputation of the Tripura Queen Pineapple and protect it from misuse and imitation, he said.
He also explained how the authorization process of farmers would enhance the competitiveness of the produce in domestic and international markets and create opportunities for increased income and livelihood.
On the other hand, a renowned Gl expert and Padmashri Awardee Dr. Rajni Kant Dwivedi spoke about the importance of North Eastern Region (NER) specific Geographical Indication (GI) products and emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to promote NER region-specific Gl products.
He however underlined the importance of promoting and protecting NER region-specific GI products which not only protect the unique identity and quality of the products but also create employment opportunities for local communities.
In a landmark initiative, the North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation (NERAMAC), under the Union DoNER ministry, has authorised 800 farmers from the northeast to use GI tag for 13 fruits and vegetables over which it has exclusive claim under Intellectual Property Rights.
Tripura Queen Pineapple is one of the fruits to get the GI tag. A GI tag offers guarantee of origin and specific characteristics of the commodities that helps build global reputation for the products.
