Expressing concern over the delay of the elections to the Village Committee, the opposition TIPRA Motha party on Wednesday filed a petition with the High Court and demanded for early completion of the elections.
Motha spokesperson, also an advocate Anthony Debbarma accompanied by the MLA Brishaketu Debbarma moved to the High Court on Wednesday to file the petition.
Hearing the petition filed by the TIPRA Motha, the division bench of the HC comprising of Chief Justice T. Amarnath Goud and Justice Arindam Lodh sought detailed report from the Advocate General over the delay of the election to the Village Committee, said advocate Anthony Debbarma, adding that the advocate general informed the Court that he would be able to file a detailed affidavit on the matter after April 13 next.
He said that the advocate general also cited the reason before the HC saying that the names of Bru voters have not yet been included in the state’s enrolment lists, following which the election is being delayed.
He said, “We argued the statement of the advocate general and wanted to know that how could the assembly election was conducted without completion of the process of enrolment of Bru voters. However, the Chief Justice had expressed his dissatisfaction over the two years delay in conducting the polls.” Further proceedings of the case would take place after the state’s response, he said.
Advocate Anthony Debbarma also informed that the division bench of the HC was also apprised of its direction to the state election commission over completion of the elections within November 2022. He said that the state government or the state election commission has not complied with the earlier direction of the HC.
