In response to reports of severe violence against minority Hindus, Tipra Motha Party MLA Ranjit Debbarma has formally addressed a letter to the Interim Government of Bangladesh urging them to provide immediate security for religious minorities residing in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
Debbarma's letter highlights the troubling situation faced by Hindus, Buddhists and Christians who have reportedly been victims of physical assaults, murder, arson and looting. The MLA described these acts as egregious and alarming with protests emerging nationwide in response to the ongoing violence.
He emphasized that the religious minorities in Bangladesh are living in fear and dire conditions, lacking basic necessities such as food, water, security and shelter. Debbarma also expressed distress over the destruction of the historic Bir Chandra Public Library in Kandirpar, Comilla, established 135 years ago by Maharaja Bir Chandra Manikya of Tripura. The library, a symbol of cultural and historical significance, has reportedly been targeted with its religious and historical artifacts, including idols, books and ornaments being destroyed and looted.
The letter further notes that many victims are now stranded at the borders of Tripura, Meghalaya, Assam, Mizoram and West Bengal, seeking refuge in India to escape the violence in Bangladesh. Debbarma condemns the brutality faced by the Indigenous communities in Khagracharri, Rangamati, and Bandarban districts of the Chittagong Hill Tracts as well as in Habiganj and Maulavibazar districts. He appeals for urgent measures to ensure their safety and prevent the spread of violence beyond Bangladesh's borders.
