To mitigate flood crisis AMC begins work of scientific drainage: Shailesh

AGARTALA:

In a bid to tackle recurring urban flooding, the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has embarked on an ambitious drainage construction initiative, leveraging scientific techniques to revamp the city's water management infrastructure.

Dr. Shailesh Kumar Yadav, Commissioner of AMC, highlighted that the drainage systems are being meticulously designed with Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) to enhance durability and efficiency. Additionally, footpaths are being integrated atop the drainage structures to optimize urban space utilization. The project is being executed under the Agartala Smart City Limited framework.

The initiative currently covers a total of 23 kilometers across various parts of the city, with work progressing in phases. On Sunday, senior AMC officials, including Dr. Yadav, conducted a field inspection of the construction work between Lal Bahadur Chowmuhani and Ashram Chowmuhani—an area notorious for severe water logging during monsoons.

“This locality has long suffered from drainage deficiencies, leading to severe water accumulation during heavy rainfall. To address this issue, we have formulated a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a scientifically planned drainage network. Although some initial hurdles such as encroachments were encountered, local stakeholders have extended their support, ensuring smooth progress,” Dr. Yadav stated.

The AMC has prioritized areas most vulnerable to flooding, aiming to complete work in these sections before the onset of monsoon this year. Meanwhile, the broader project is expected to be fully implemented within the next two years, transforming the city's resilience against flooding.
