The state agriculture and farmers welfare minister Ratan Lal Nath on Wednesday said that the government has taken initiative to compensate at least 81301 farmers across the state, who were affected by the natural disasters like rain and cyclone.
Addressing a press conference here in the conference hall of the civil secretariat on Wednesday evening, the minister said that from November 16 to 18 previous year’s crops of farmers covering at least 23171 hectares of land were damaged due to the cyclone ‘Midhili’, where over 58000 farmers were affected. The Department of Agriculture has sanctioned Rs 14.59 crore as compensation for the affected farmers, he told reporters.
He further added that the affected farmers will be paid Rs 8,500 per hectare. Moreover, Rs 7.38 crore was sanctioned for compensation to at least 20,078 farmers under the Horticulture Department and Rs 44 lakhs 60 thousand will be given to 874 farmers under Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana.
Meanwhile, he said that the government has set a target to achieve self-sufficiency through the Agriculture department and accordingly the government is working to enhance the livelihood of the farmers and double up the farmers’ income.
The farmers of the state had incurred losses due to untimely rains in the state from December 6 to 8 in the previous year, where 2139 farmers will be assisted by Rs 69 lakhs 30 thousand under Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana.
He also said that compensation has already been sought from the department under the SDRF scheme to help farmers affected by heavy rains in the state on May 28 this year.
