Aiming to strengthen the state’s Public Distribution System (PDS) and ease the beneficiaries in withdrawing their PDS items, the Tripura government has decided to open more 51 ration shops across the state.
Addressing a press conference here at the civil secretariat on Tuesday, the state food and civil supplies minister Sushanta Chowdhury said, “Presently there are 2060 rations shops. Government has decided to open more 51 rations shops across the state in addition to the existing.”
“The decision has come up in view taking the PDS to every door based on the geographical location. This will ease the beneficiaries in withdrawing their PDS items,” he told reporters, adding that during the last five years the government has opened at least 252 ration shops across the state.
Describing the locations, where the 51 more rations shops will be opened, the minister said that 7 ration shops will be opened at Dharmanagar, 1 in Panisagar, 1 in Kanchanpur, 3 in Kailasahar, 5 in Kumarghat, 2 in Kamalpur, 1 in Khowai, 2 in Teliamura, 2 in Sadar, 6 in Jirania, 1 in Mohanpur, 1 in Bishalgarh, 6 in Sonamura, 8 in Udaipur, 1 in Karbook, 1 in Belonia and 3 in Sabroom.
Meanwhile, the minister further informed that dairy products of Gomati Dairy Firm will be made available in at least 15 ration shops here in the capital town of Agartala and surrounding areas. Government has made an agreement with the firm for distribution of the dairy products including Ice Cream, Curd, Paneer and Ghee from February 16 next, he said, adding that this is a pilot project of the government and based on the response, the next course of action will be taken. People can buy dairy products at subsidized prices.
The minister also informed that the state food and civil supplies department has decided to provide additional 5 kg of rice per card holders for two months of February and March this year. The minister said that the additional 5 kg of rice will be distributed to all card holders and for APL category the additional rice will be provided at a subsidized rate of Rs. 13 per kg.
