Tripura remembers ‘Partition Horror’ ahead of I’Day celebration

AGARTALA:

As the nation geared up to celebrate the country’s 77th Independence Day, the state of Tripura along with the rest of the nation on Monday observed partition Horror Remembrance Day to remember the victims of the 1947 violence that accompanied the country's partition.

Addressing a paroogramme here at Agartala Rabindra Bhawan, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said that India’s partition has also brought a partition to the country’s culture and tradition, where the people of Punjab and West Bengal have been affected the most.

“Millions of our sisters and brothers were displaced and many lost their lives due to mindless hate and violence,” he said, adding that the Remembrance Day of the partition horror needs to be studied to understand the pain and suffering that the people faced in 1947.

He said, “When we see the pictures of the partition of the country, we can understand how much pain and suffering people endured at that time. We must not forget the history of their suffering.”

Meanwhile, the former deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Verma said that the partition is a shameful chapter in the history of humanity. “Such division should not come again. To prevent this from happening again, this day is being observed as a Memorial Day,” he said.

Minister of Social Welfare and Social Education Tinku Roy, MBB University Vice-Chancellor Satyadeo Poddar, eminent educationist Jagadish Gana Chowdhury, Secretary of Information and Culture Affairs Department P K Chakraborty and others were present in the programme.
