Along with the rest of the world, Tripura has made the deck ready to observe the 10th International Day of Yoga on Friday. The main event will be held here at Agartala Hapania International Ground on Friday, said Sports and Youth Affair Minister Tinku Roy.
Addressing a press conference here in the conference hall of the civil secretariat on Thursday, the minister said that on September 27, 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned the necessity of observing Yoga Day at the United Nations and demanded to observe Yoga Day on June 21 at the international level.
“Honoring the thoughts of the Prime Minister, the United Nations declared June 21 every year as the International Day of Yoga,” he said, adding that realizing the importance of yoga in keeping the mind and body healthy, the state government has included yoga in the Tripura Sports Policy. Yoga has been introduced in various schools as well as various centers run by the Sports Department in the state, he added.
In the press conference, the Secretary of Youth Affairs and Sports Department, Dr Pradeep Kumar Chakraborty said that in addition to the observance of Yoga Day on Friday, a special discussion has been organized on increasing millet production and awareness. Millet has immense importance as a healthy food. Therefore, the United Nations has declared the year 2023 as the International Millet Year as per India's proposal to increase global awareness about Millet.
The central government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already taken various initiatives to increase millet production in the country. Besides raising awareness about the health benefits of millet, several initiatives have been taken in the state through the Department of Agriculture to increase the production of millet, he told reporters.
