In a significant narcotics operation, law enforcement authorities in Churaibari intercepted a lorry on Wednesday afternoon, seizing 275 kg of dry ganja valued at approximately Rs 25 lakh. The police apprehended the driver, Dwipkumar Hajong, and the co-driver, Rajib Kalita, both residents of Bakko in Assam, in connection with the illegal transport.
Acting on a tip-off, Pranab Milli, the gate in-charge of Churaibari watch post, directed the police to intercept the six-wheeler truck bearing registration number AS01QC-8165 at the check post. Upon inspecting the vehicle, authorities discovered 45 packets of ganja concealed in various compartments.
The arrested individuals now face charges under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. An ongoing investigation has been launched to uncover the origin and intended destination of the seized drug haul.
Of note, the vehicle in question, reportedly belonging to Tripura state, managed to traverse around 20 police checkpoints before entering Assam, prompting concerns regarding the effectiveness and role of the Tripura police in combating the illicit drug trade. The incident underscores the need for heightened vigilance and coordination among law enforcement agencies to address the growing menace of drug trafficking in the region.
