Two held while smuggling turtle in Kanchanpur

AGARTALA:

Two individuals were apprehended by Tripura Police in the early hours of Wednesday for attempting to smuggle five rare species of turtles and tortoises in Jampui hill, located in the North District of Tripura, which shares an interstate border with Mizoram.

Acting on a tip-off, Officer-in-Charge Uddyam Debbarma and the Kanchanpur police station team conducted a successful raid at the Naka check post on the Jampui-Kanchanpur 44A-National Highway. The operation resulted in the discovery of 2 large sea turtles and 3 tortoises being transported illegally through the Mizoram border.

The arrested individuals, identified as Chandaram Reang and Khachuk Reang, both permanent residents of the Bru refugee camp in Kanchanpur of the North District, are now in custody. The smuggling of these reptiles was foiled by the timely intervention of Tripura Police in their efforts to curb illegal wildlife trafficking.
