Tripura along with the rest of the nation on Friday observed the Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda.
The state-level programme was held here at Agartala Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan, where Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, Union DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, Lok Sabha MP Kriti Singh Debbarman, tribal welfare minister Bikash Debbarma and others were present.
Gracing the occasion, the Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia slammed the previous Congress-led government at the Centre and said that the Congress had earlier neglected the Adivasis in the country. The voices of the Adivasis were throttled by the previous Congress government, he added.
“It was after 2014, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid due respect to the Adivasis and the indigenous community in the country,” he said, adding that at a time when the Congress used to only talk about politics and tried to diminish the Indian history to undermine the contribution of the freedom fighters like Bhagwan Birsa Munda, PM Modi declared November 15 as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas to preserve this history and remember the remarkable contribution of Adivasi freedom fighter Birsa Munda, who took a firm stand against the British rule.
Scindia highlighted that Prime Minister Modi has appointed indigenous leaders to key positions, including as Union and State Ministers, as well as Governors.
He said, “For the first time in the history of India, a President from the indigenous community was elected. When the name of Draupadi Murmu as President of India was announced, Congress protested to show disrespect to the indigenous community. But under a Prime Minister like Modi, the woman President is now leading the country in a new direction.”
