The Election Commission of India has approved 12 alternative identity proofs for the voters for this ensuing assembly election in the state scheduled to be held on February 16 next, said Chief Electoral Officer Kiren Gitte on Saturday.
CEO Gitte said that the electorates can exercise their democratic rights by showing 12 identity cards as alternatives of photo voter ID cards on the day of polling.
Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, the CEIO said that the 12 alternative ID proofs include – Aadhar Card, MGNREGA Job Card, Photo Passbook issued by Bank or Post Office, Health Insurance Smart Card issued by Ministry of Labour, Driving License, PAN Card, RGI Smart Card issued by NPR, Indian Passport, Pension Document with Photo, Central Government Service Identity Card with photograph of State Government, PSU, Public Limited Company employees, Official Identity Card issued to MPs, MLAs, MLCs and Unique Disability ID issued by Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
Meanwhile, the CEO said that the security enforcement agencies seized illegal liquor, drugs, cash and other items worth Rs 29 crore 25 lakh 74 thousand across the state.
“36 FIRs had been registered and 27 people arrested over poll-related violence since January 18, when the Assembly elections were announced,” he told reporters on Saturday, adding that most of the cases were related to arson on party offices, damaging of campaign materials, assaults on people, vandalism on cars, threatening and intimidation.
He said that the Election Commission is running a special ‘Mission Zero Violence and 929’ after a survey revealed that 929 out of 3,214 polling stations in 2018 had low voter turnout. The special drive aims to boost voter turnout.
The commission said it would provide a level playing field and ensure that “partisan attitude” would not be shown to any party or candidate.
The CEO said a strict eye was being kept on all officials and personnel. Two police inspectors with criminal cases were taken off poll duty, as were two others closely related to candidates.
