Minister of Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Sushanta Chowdhury, announced on Tuesday that the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) is on track to complete the construction of a greenfield depot with a capacity of 21,000 kiloliters by the year 2025.
Chairing a review meeting for the project, Minister Chowdhury who also oversees the Transport and Tourism portfolio, provided insights into the ongoing development. The project initiated in 2022 is progressing on an approximately 85-acre site in Sekerkote located about 16 km from Agartala.
"With an estimated cost of Rs 500 crore the depot will serve as a storage facility for petrol, diesel and kerosene. Currently 30 percent of the construction work has been accomplished. Despite encountering challenges in specific areas concerted efforts are underway to swiftly address these issues. The government has set a target to finalize the project by 2025 and upon completion the existing depot in Dharmanagar in the North district will be relocated here," explained the minister.
Minister Chowdhury highlighted IOCL's strategic plan to export fuel to Bangladesh, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to facilitate this initiative. He acknowledged challenges related to land acquisition, roads and finances indicating that discussions during the meeting centered on expediting the project. This urgency is particularly crucial due to the artificial crisis arising during the rainy season causing roadblocks and hindering the timely delivery of petrol and diesel.
The meeting attended by key officials including Indian Oil Corporation Chief General Manager (Operations) Nitin Bhatnagar, Deputy General Manager (Operations) Dipak Kumar Pathak, Chief Engineer Rajib Debbarma and Director of the Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Department Nirmal Adhikari, focused on addressing challenges and ensuring the project's smooth progression.
