Tripura Police in last from May 2023 till today, arrested 1266 people and registered 704 cases after drugs were seized from their possession, said Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha.
In a press statement, Chief Minister Saha said that the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, also known as the 'World Drug Day', is celebrated on 26th June every year to strengthen global action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society, free of drug abuse.
He said that the Government of India has also adopted a vision for a "Drug Free India" and "Nasha Mukt Bharat Pakhwada" from 12th June to 26th June this year.
“The Theme "Drug Free India" aims at combating misinformation and promotes sharing the facts on drugs. The objective is to save people from health risk and to provide solutions to tackle the world drug problem on the basis of evidence-based prevention, treatment and care. The State Government is fully committed to eradicate drug menace and so the 'Nasha Mukt Tripura' campaign was launched in 2018”, he said.
He further said that as a part of this campaign, Tripura Police in coordination with other sister agencies, has been actively involved in checking drug trade and taking action against criminals involved including the consumers, sellers, possessors, transporters, cultivators, importers and exporters of drugs.
“As a part of "Nasha Mukt Tripura" campaign, during the last one year from May 2023 to May 2024, Tripura Police in coordination with other sister agencies, has seized large amount of ganja, heroin, good numbers of cough syrup and tablets. A huge number of ganja seedlings, plantations were destroyed. In this connection, 704 cases have been registered in different Police Stations of the state coupled with arrest of 1266 persons. In addition, properties including vehicles of drug traffickers worth Rs 7 crores have also been attached to deprive the drug criminals from enjoying the proceeds of crime”, he said.
Dr Saha further said that Tripura Police is also trying to take the parents and neighbours of previous drug addicts into confidence which has brought in several successes for the police in its fight against drug trade.
“We urge all the peace-loving citizens of Tripura to extend full cooperation to the Tripura Police in its fight against drug menace. Moreover, the State Government has undertaken alternative source of livelihood programmes in the areas where cannabis cultivation is rampant”, he added.
